The Hidden Mist has a reputation of producing cut-throat shinobi, and is known for excessive violence. A contributor to this accepted generalization is their graduation exam, in which classmates were pitted against each other in mortal combat. This assured that the next generation was skilled and prepared for the life of a ninja, but resulted in fewer numbers. The practice has since been discontinued, but there is no reason to think the Hidden Mist has gone soft.
